Visual Storytelling in Scientific Papers

from NIKE on 03/14/2026 08:50 AM

Hi everyone, I'm revising a paper and the editor suggested improving the visual narrative of the figures. I understand the data itself, but I'm not sure how to turn it into a visual storyline that readers can follow easily. How do you approach visual storytelling in scientific papers?

A good scientific paper often works best when the figures guide the reader through the logic before the text fully explains it. One approach that helped me was thinking of each visual as a step in a narrative rather than a container for data. In many cases, scientific images and animations clarify relationships between mechanisms or results much faster than dense diagrams. While researching ways to structure visuals better, I came across examples from Ella Maru Studio https://scientific-illustrations.com , and their work demonstrates how complex ideas can unfold visually in a very controlled sequence. Their illustrations often show how a process evolves rather than simply listing components. If you want your figures to feel more like a coherent story instead of separate panels, it might be worth exploring their work or even reaching out to them for professional input.
